Canadian Geographic and its publisher The Royal Canadian Geographical Society, with funding from the Government of Canada, created this interactive website as part of a larger initiative dedicated to highlighting community relocations in Canada.
The places included here are merely a selection of numerous communities, both historic and modern, forced to move due to urban redevelopment, the creation of national parks, war, economic forces, government policies or major infrastructure projects. They were chosen to illustrate both the reasons for and regional diversity of such relocations, and are not meant to represent all communities that have been forced to move for any reason. (We welcome the addition of other relocated communities and the stories behind them; add yours by clicking “Your stories”).
In addition to this website, this initiative also includes a four-part documentary series, a feature story in Canadian Geographic, an education program with a Giant Floor map and associated learning resources, a photo competition, an exhibit and more.
